Outlook for Mac "identities" problem preventing me from access older email

"Outlook cannot open the file because it is not associated with the default identity."

Is there a workaround. I can not open older email because I do not know my "default identity"

I've re built my identities database several times, I searched for the older default identities files within Outlook. I've paid to have a computer tech person try to resolve the problem. They could not resolve the issue. There must be a work around here.
